Through many of our articles, we have established the fact that everyone has their commitments and a list of activities packed in your daily schedule. While we fulfill our role as a family member/parent/ breadwinner and a office worker, we often see ourselves crashing a number of activities in parallel. This forces us to have quick convenient meals that may not be health to our body ( refer here to one of our articles on convenient food) and accumulates stress and strains our physical and emotional health.
Have you ever seen your colleague/peers/loved ones flaring up unexpectedly out of the blue? They must have suppressed their emotions and stress for a long time such that they needed an avenue to let out even though it may seem uncalled for. So, how do we keep at peace with ourselves from time to time? While we do know a healthy diet and exercising would help, what other remedies can we adopt?
Start listening to yourself
Acknowledge the emotions within in. If it helps, journal them down.
Determine if it really makes sense given the situation and figure out what makes you feel that way.
Let go of unmanageable emotions. Many situations will be out of your control, so it is important to let go of this type of anger. For an example ask yourself, "Can I resolve whatever it is that's causing this anger?" If you can't, then you need to let it go.
Here comes the important part. If it is within your means, recognize the triggers and find alternatives. Take several deep breaths and dive in deeper into the emotion. Ask yourself why you are feeling that way? It is important we face our emotions now than suppressing the emotional built up.
Ask yourself, "How would my favorite leader handle this situation?"
Map out a plan and do something constructive about it.
Speak to your family and close friends to check on a neutral perspective and ask for constructive feedbacks.
If you are still feeling stressed and anxious, take some time off and do something you like. They call it the Act of Love to oneself. It get be a simple as getting yourself a warm bathe, start a gratitude list, try out meditation, expose yourself to the greens or even wearing your favorite outfit. This simple gesture will help you change your state of mind.
Be patient
It takes time to become less overwhelmed, so don’t take it to heart if you still feel prickles so often. You’ll learn how to manage your feelings in due time. Also, think of how this learning process will greatly help you as you experience more emotionally-challenging situations. Patience is key when it comes to improving yourself.
Kudos to you for taking the right step in managing your baggage of emotions! You’ll soon develop a thick (emotional) skin and will emerge as a mature adult capable of handling their emotions.
